Quit India Movement
A collage by Shrikant Apte

Quit India Movement

Under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi Quit India Movement was launched in August 1942 from Bombay (now called Mumbai). The purpose of the movement was to set up a series of non-violent protests hopefully leading up to independence.

Gandhi said, "We shall either free India or die in the attempt; We shall not live to see the perpetuation of our slavery". The words Do or Die soon became popular among Indian people. As a result of this series of revolts broke out. The popular resentment that built up as a result of this movement proved to be the last nail in the coffin of British rule in India.
