Swami Vivekanand

(1863-1902)
A spiritual genius of commanding intellect and power, Swami Vivekanand crammed immense labor and achievement into his short life. Born in Calcutta, he was the chief disciple of Ramakrishna Paramhansa and the founder of Ramakrishna Mission.

Accepting an opportunity to represent Hinduism at Chicago's Parliament of Religions in 1893, Vivekanand won instant celebrity status in America and a ready forum for his spiritual teachings.

Swami Vivekanand inspired many leaders who gave direction to the freedom struggle of India. Even in independent India, he continues to inspire nationalists.
